GNAG Theatre Education Program presents: The Sound of Music, Spring 2020

Join us for a classic production of this all-time favourite. This show has roles for expert singers and offers some very fine character parts. There are 7 featured children’s roles, and a number of speaking-only parts for older adults.

There will be opportunity to play in the Townsfolk chorus with songs and dances, specifically for newer performers.

The storyline:
Mountain-bred Maria is an awkward fit at Nonnberg Abbey.  Her desire for the cloister fights her urge to sing for joy.

Mother Superior sends her on a secular mission: to help out a widower with 7 children.  How the assignment helps to discover her true place in the world, and how her courage helps her new family escape the Nazi occupation of Austria in 1938 is the backdrop to a series of well-loved songs.

The Characters are modelled on the story of the real-life Von Trapp family:

7 kids, age 8 to 15 who sing well.

Liesl and Rolf, teen sweethearts, who sing strongly and dance.

Women/ sopranos/ trebles:  The Mother Superior and 3 speaking nuns.  Very strong singers.

3 postulants, and a choir of nuns.

Captain Von Trapp, Elsa Schraeder, Max Dettweiler, all sing solo and in duet, and dance well.
Frau Schmidt, Franz
10 speaking adult roles (Admiral, Soldiers, Baron Elberfeld , Herr Zeller)
